Golf Course Review

The Duke’s St Andrews is an 18 hole heathland golf course owned by the same company (Kohler) that owns the Old Course Hotel. The course was built so guests had an option of good golf without being dependent upon the Links Trust and the ballot system of the Old Course.

The Duke’s Synopsis

The original Peter Thomson design was renovated by Tim Liddy and 5 new holes emerged in 2006. The Duke’s St Andrews won’t be on the top of any must-play list for most visitors to St Andrew’s but that says more about The Old Course than The Duke’s. The same could be said for every other course in Fife. It does offer a very good alternative to links if you fail to win the ballot and have already been to the New, Eden, Jubilee, or Castle.

The Duke’s Summary

Known for its stunning panoramic views over the Old Grey Toon of St Andrews and the Fife coastline, the heathland course is often overlooked by first-time visitors. Heathland golf in the Home of Golf was always going to be a tough sell. Fair or not, all courses in Fife will be compared to The Old Course and new builds will be compared to Kingsbarns and now Dumbarnie.

There should be a large proportion of good two-shot holes and at least four one-shot holes. There should be little walking between...
