Golf Course Review
The Hallamshire Golf Club is located between the City of Sheffield, South Yorkshire and the Peak District National Park. The 18 hole heathland is one of Yorkshire’s finest golf clubs.
Hallamshire Golf Club History
A local newspaper proprietor, Christopher Leng, opened the golf course in 1897.
Changes were made to the original course before Harry Colt, in 1937, advised on changes which made the club we know today. The local press reported a complete overhaul to the course’s bunkering and the introduction of a ‘water supply’ or irrigation.
Of interest, J Morrison wrote in the winter of 1938 that a WA Murray was carrying out construction alterations at the club. No detail is given as to what they may have entailed.
The Modern Course Hallamshire GC
The course is accented with heather, gorse and bilberries – a European blueberry! The free draining property plays firm in the winter and fast especially in the summer. The greens are not expansive but are known to provide the courses challenge.
The outward nine is also considered to be the more difficult of the two nines. The sage advice? Survive the front nine and attempt to score on the back nine. How so? Three of the last five holes are par 5’s. As well, the two one shot holes on the back nine are both short and 128 and 134 yards respectively.
