Sir (Major) Guy Campbell is an unsung hero of the golden age of golf course architecture. With contributions from John Low and CK Hutchison, Golf for Beginners should be better known.
Perhaps one of the most underrated golf course architecture texts, Chapter Six is where it becomes interesting. Diagrams show a tendency towards wide, undulating fairways, and centre-line bunkers. Opinions offered on tees, greens, bunkers and hazards.
First Editions of Golf for Beginners are easily obtained and they won't cost you a fortune. There was an American first edition in 1922 and a British first edition in 1923.
