Golf Course Review

Hindhead Golf Club is located in the small Surrey village bearing its name. Found in the South Downs National Park near the Hampshire Border. One of the best golf courses in England and counted by some in the Top 100 in UK and Ireland, this JH Taylor design is one of his best.

Hindhead Golf Club History

Hindhead Golf Club is a heathland golf course dating from 1904 and founded by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of Sherlock Holmes fame. JH Taylor laid out the course in 1904 with 12 holes open for play. A year later, the additional six holes were brought into play and officially opened by a match between him and James Braid.

Hinhead’s Current Golf Course

Five sets of tees provide appropriate tests for all caliber of players. The course can be played from just over 4200 yards to just under 6400 yards. Holes 2 through 9 are routed through valleys before emerging on the upper plateau for the back nine.

The scorecard tells an interesting tale. The first 11 holes never have the same par hole played in succession. The only time you play a run of holes with the same par is from 11 to 14 and then back to back at 17 and 18. There are only two Par 5’s but five Par 3’s.

In recent years the club has made some continual improvements with tees, greens, and bunkers having been rebuilt reducing blindness, particularly on the back nine.

PETER ALLISS ON HINDHEAD GOLF CLUB

Featured Architect: MacKenzie, Alister

As taken from his book, Golf Architecture, Alister MacKenzie felt the following were essential: The course, where possible, should be arranged in two loops of nine holes. There should be a large proportion of good two-shot holes and at least four one-shot holes. There should be little walking between...
