Golf Course Review

Dunfanaghy Golf Club lies on the shores of Sheephaven Bay and Killahoey Beach in the shadow of Muckish mountain. The course is found in the small resort town and former fishing port of Dunfanaghy, County Donegal.

The earliest example of golf in the area dates to the 1740s when a founding member of the R&A, Mr Stewart, laid out a private six-hole course between Horn Head bridge and Tramore Beach.

Golf is first reported in the Derry Journal in April of 1886 and is listed in the Golfer and Sportsman Holiday Guide of 1897.

The golf club itself was established on July 11, 1906, with a ‘new’ set of 18 holes on offer. The golf course had been laid out by Harry Vardon in 1905.
