Downfield Golf Club

Most wouldn't visit a parkland course on a trip to Scotland. If you do, this should be the one...

Downfield Golf Club

Angus, DD2 3QP, Scotland

Overview

Like Bobby Jones, at Wallasey and later Royal Liverpool, Paul Lawrie qualified for the Open here and went on to win the Championship. Despite not being links, it has hosted qualifying for both the Senior Open and The Open Championship - twice.

It also seems to make a lasting impression on the better players. Sam Torrance voted the 11th as one of the best holes in Scotland. The par 3 12th is said to be on of Gary Player's favourites.

Golf Course Review

Golf was played at Downfield Golf Club around the turn of the century on a 9 hole course. During WW1, the course was lost when the ground was turned over for agricultural use. It would be 1932 before golf was once again played on the grounds. It wasn't long before the course was extended to 18 holes. By 1964, the course was again modified and revamped which is largely the course we know today.

Downfield Golf Club is a parkland golf course where golf began and where links golf reigns supreme. Any inland golf course in this neck of the woods has to be good to even get a mention. Tree-lined, inland golf will never compete with nearby Carnoustie and St Andrews. However, if the links are rammed, Downfield Golf Club is an off-the-radar parkland course that is a surprisingly good option found on the north side of Dundee. Water comes into play on 7 of the 18 holes.
